Exterior Painting

Weatherboard, render and fibro on the coast take a beating from salt and sun. We prep for the conditions — pressure wash, scrape, fill, prime — then top-coat with a system built to hold its colour out here, not just in the tin.

How we quote it

The same 7 lines — every time.

Whatever the surface, your quote splits the work the same honest way, so you can see exactly what you’re paying for.

The 7-line quote
  1. 1 Wash + clean. Sugar-soap removes oils and residue — without it, paint lifts.
  2. 2 Sanding + filling. Nail holes, cracks, surface roughness. Finish quality lives here.
  3. 3 Masking + drop sheets. Floors, fixtures, edges. Skip it and you pay in cleanup.
  4. 4 Primer (surface-specific). New plaster, old enamel and steel each need a different primer.
  5. 5 Number of coats. Two is standard. One means you’ll see the old colour through it.
  6. 6 Paint brand + product. Named on the quote — Dulux Wash & Wear, not “trade white”.
  7. 7 Cut-in + edges. Ceilings, skirting, architraves — visible for the next 10 years.
If a quote doesn’t show these lines, you can’t compare it — and you don’t know what’s been cut.

Licensed, covered, warranted

The paperwork behind the price.

NSW 284 551C, Public liability to $20M, and a 7-year workmanship workmanship warranty — all in writing, all on request.

Dan walks through exactly what’s covered — the licence you can verify, the cover that protects your home, and the warranty that names its own exclusions instead of hiding them.

The licence, the cover, the warranty — and how to check each one.

Questions, answered

Exterior Painting — common questions.

What happens if it rains? +
Exterior paint needs dry surfaces and the right temperature. We build a weather rule into your quote — if rain pushes a coat, we reschedule rather than paint over damp and risk the finish lifting.
My house was built before 1970 — is there lead paint? +
Quite possibly. We test, and where lead is present we prep lead-safe (containment, the right PPE, correct disposal). It’s a specialist step we price honestly rather than skipping.
How long will an exterior repaint last out here? +
A properly-prepped coastal system with the right product holds up well past the 7-year workmanship warranty. The difference is almost entirely in the prep and primer — which is exactly why we itemise them.
Do render, fibro and weatherboard get the same paint? +
No — each gets its own system. Render needs a breathable, alkali-resistant primer; fibro and Hardies need the right sealer; bare or weathered timber needs an oil-based primer first. Putting one “house paint” over all three is how a cheap exterior crazes or peels inside a year.
How do you reach a two-storey or steep exterior? +
With scaffold or a harness where the height calls for it — costed as its own line. The “I’ll just use my ladder” quote is the one where the access risk, and the liability if something goes wrong, quietly becomes yours. We carry the insurance and quote the safe method.
Can you treat rusty gutters, fascia and steel? +
Yes. Steel and metal trim need the rust wire-brushed or ground back, an etch or rust-converting primer, then the right topcoat — not paint straight over the rust. Skip that step and the rust bleeds through the new coat within a couple of seasons.
